Hi David - I have exactly the same issue, reading some more forums it appears that if you have an older version of Office 2011 say 14.1.0 and you upgrade to 14.1.2 and imeadiately upgrade to 14.1.3 without using 14.1.2 then it works, however it seems if you have used (as I have done) 14.1.2 the upgrade fails. I am afraid this is one of the issues with still dealing with Microsoft they seem incapable of getting it right first time. I just hope someone from MS is reading this and gets a fix pronto! I am also going to the Office forums but so far no luck with an answer.
I have installed 14.1.2 before using Apple Remote Desktop with no problems. However, with 14.1.3, I get this error message: pam_acct_mgmt: permission denied and no changes to the machine were made. When I logged in with my local admin account, it won't install the update because the Hard Drive has this Yellow '!' On the hard drive, then I reboot, login with my local admin account again and the update installs fine. I've asked Microsoft why this happened and they said it's not their fault, it's Apple's fault. What I found is when I changed the.preflight script for the Office2011_all_quit_14.1.3.combo.pkg from 'su' to 'sudo', the pam_acct_mgmt went away, but it was still failing to install. Maybe it has something to do with the QuitApps.app that seems to make the whole Update fail?
